When it comes to writing your blog posts, it’s critical that you have a goal in mind. Think about who your audience is and the reason they are visiting your website.

  • Why are they on your website?

  • What information are they searching for?

  • What problems are they experiencing, that you can help them overcome?

The purpose of your blog should be to assist your reader. They have specific needs and you need to provide useful content that is going to address those needs.

Creating blog post content takes time. And it first starts with planning. If you know your audience well, you’ll instantly know the purpose of your blog. Many business owners fail to do this when they begin their blogging journey, not realizing how important it really is. By staying laser-focused on your target audience, you’re better able to address their needs more personally in a way that resonates with them. This solid focus can help in meeting your audience exactly where they are in their buying journey.

And by creating the right type of content for your audience at the right time, this allows you to more readily personalize your message to them in a way that feels more authentic for them. This helps to build greater trust and a better relationship.

According to Curata, longer more detailed blog posts generate 9X more leads than shorter posts.

That is why you see businesses focused on longer blog post content. This fact is undeniable according to SearchMetrics, whose found that the average word count of the highest ranked blog content in the Google platform comes up between 1,140-1,285 words. This is a far cry from the standard 500 word articles from years past.

It's clear that Google is recognizing the importance of more in-depth content. However, it's not just about the word count. The quality of the content must appeal to your reader otherwise they won't stay on your website. And since Google also factors in how long visitors stay on your website, it's critical that your content is valuable to your readers.

The longer visitors stay on your page, this signals to Google that the content is quality content worth reading.

Your intention is to serve your readers and the best way to do so is by addressing these things:

  • As a blog owner, why does your blog exist?

  • Who is your audience?

  • What is their demographic makeup?

  • Do you know the goals, challenges or issues your audience has been experiencing?

  • What do you want your blog content to achieve?

  • Does your blog content align with the overall vision you have for your blog?

  • What is your content strategy? Do you have a plan/schedule?

  • How do you plan to promote your blog?

  • How do you plan to measure the results of your efforts?

  • How much do you have to invest in your blog content in terms of time and money?

These are some of the questions you'll need to ask yourself. However, one thing is true ...

A good blog post also needs the following:

  • Understand how compelling headlines can make or break your article. A good headline can drive traffic because it speaks to your readers needs instantly!

  • Plan your topics very strategically and add them to a content calendar schedule.

  • Write blog posts on topics your audience wants information on.

  • Know how to hook your reader and effectively engage them

  • Optimize your blog post for the search engines
